Jockey Kelly Harrison, sponsored by The Crown Hotel at Bawtry, has joined an elite 'club' by becoming only the sixth female rider in the history of the sport to become a fully fledged professional.

Yorkshire born Kelly is now competing on equal terms with the likes of Frankie Dettori, six-times champion jockey Kieren Fallon and celebrated female jockey Hayley Turner.

"It's always been my ambition to ride out my claim," says Kelly (26), whose landmark 95th winner came on board the Brian Baugh-trained John Potts at Wolverhampton.

"I've been supported by many different trainers and I'm very grateful to them all for putting their faith in me throughout my apprenticeship."

Kelly, who graduated from showjumping and eventing as a teenager, aims to establish herself among the sport's bigger names this summer by riding for as many trainers as possible.

She is also employed as a work rider for leading Newmarket trainer Henry Cecil, and has had the privilege of riding 2,000 Guineas favourite Frankel in his homework as a two-year-old.

Craig Dowie, Managing Director of The Crown, adds: "We would like to extend our congratulations to Kelly, and are delighted to be associated with her."

Kelly is pictured toasting her success with Craig and At The Races presenter Simon Mapletoft at a racing forum for the Bawtry Business Club at the hotel last week.

Ends.
